Who Can Apply for Citizenship or Naturalization?

In the U.S., there are two ways to obtain citizenship or naturalization: you can either be naturalized or you can be born in the country to parents who are U.S. citizens.

You can apply for citizenship if:

  • You are a lawful permanent resident.
  • You have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 5 years.
  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You have maintained continuous physical presence in the U.S.
  • You have been present in the U.S. for at least 30 months.
  • You have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 50% of the time since your lawful permanent resident status began.
  • You have been a resident of the state in which you are applying for at least 3 months.
  • You are a person of good moral character.
  • You can read, write, and speak the English language.
  • You can demonstrate a basic understanding of the fundamentals of the history, principles, and structure of the U.S. government.
  • You can pass a test that demonstrates your knowledge of the fundamentals of the history, principles, and structure of the U.S. government.

If you meet these requirements, you can begin the process of applying for citizenship. The process can be lengthy and challenging, but our Houston citizenship and naturalization attorneys can help you through each step.

  • You have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 50% of the time since your lawful permanent resident status began.
  • You have been a resident of the state in which you are applying for at least 1 year.
  • You are a person of good moral character.
